Physiology and Pharmacology Research in Israel
Research in physiology and pharmacology in Israel is conducted within a wide framework of establishments, which includes the country’s four medical schools (Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa and Be’er Sheva), faculties of biology or life sciences in the seven universities, government research institutes (principally the Israel Institute of Biological Research), research institutes of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), clinical hospital laboratories, and industry.
A large number of independent researchers are engaged in many aspects of the disciplines of physiology and pharmacology, with an especially strong accent on neurosciences and the cardiovascular system. As in other branches of academic life in Israel, the accent is on cooperation with foreign scientists, which is fostered by binational research funds, such as those with USA and Germany.
As is appropriate to a country which includes desert areas within its small area, much effort has been invested in environmental physiology over the years. This typifies the strong accent on scientific research which characterizes Israel’s infrastructure, and which has achieved many important developments in the past.
In recent years, the expansion of high-tech industry has brought with it an investment in physiology-based developments for the medical field, as well as new drug development. The latter is frequently on a collaborative basis between industrial concerns and academic know-how in the universities, as well as by independent industrial concerns.
The investment in research in physiology and pharmacology has contributed to the high standards of medical practice in Israel, and promises to bring further developments for the economy as well as the health of our citizens.
